Background and Rationale

Scientific research constitutes a fundamental pillar in the advancement of engineering sciences and technological innovation. In the field of structural engineering and mechanics of materials, it plays a crucial role in the design of safe, durable, and economically efficient infrastructures that are adapted to environmental constraints and socio-economic realities.

In light of current challenges related to urbanization, infrastructure development, structural resilience, and the rational use of resources, Africa—and particularly Togo—must strengthen research, innovation, and the valorization of scientific outcomes in these domains. It is therefore essential to mobilize universities, research institutes, training centers, and socio-economic stakeholders around issues related to the mechanical behavior of materials, structural durability, and modern design and dimensioning methods.

Research institutions bear the responsibility of creating conducive environments for the dissemination, exchange, and promotion of scientific and technical work. Such initiatives foster collaboration among researchers, engineers, and professionals, while reinforcing synergies between fundamental research, applied research, and professional practice.

Within this framework, the Conference on Structural and Materials Engineering is conceived as a platform for scientific exchange and collective reflection. It aims to highlight recent advances, enhance the visibility of research conducted in laboratories and industrial units, and promote interdisciplinary collaborations in support of sustainable territorial development.

The expected contributions will enrich scientific and technical discussions on the role of structural engineering and materials mechanics in the design of resilient, innovative, and sustainable infrastructures adapted to African contexts.

Themes and Workshops

The conference presentations will primarily focus on the following themes:

  • Mechanics of materials: behavior, failure, fatigue, and durability

  • Innovative and sustainable materials, and local resources

  • Structural analysis, modeling, and design

  • Numerical modeling and simulation of materials and structures

  • Durability, resilience, and rehabilitation of structures

  • Standards, innovation, and transfer to professional practice

These themes will be structured into three main scientific workshops during the conference. In addition, dedicated training workshops will also be organized.

Scientific Workshops

  • Workshop 1: Mechanics and characterization of materials

  • Workshop 2: Modeling and structural design

  • Workshop 3: Durability, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of structures

  • Workshop 4: Project planning, scientific writing, and publication

Activities and Presentation Formats

The activities planned for the CISM 2026 Conference are organized into four (4) main categories:

  • Plenary lectures
  • Scientific presentation sessions
  • Strategic workshop on research structuring
  • Training sessions: project definition, planning, scientific writing, and publication

Presentation Formats

Four presentation formats are available:

  • On-site oral presentation
